Do You Want To Live To 150 Years Old?

antioxidantBarbara Walter’s has discussed it on an ABC News Special. You’ve heard Dr. Oz give his recommendations on Oprah on the topic. Everywhere you turn, everyone wants to turn back the clock on aging.  It’s a subject we’ve been helping our customers about for years.

There are a lot of opinions about what to do to turn back the clock. Dr. Michael Pinkus has long touted the benefits of anti-oxidants and taking supplements with higher ORAC values. Why do you need anti-oxidants? Well, he likes to use this analogy about the ‘bad peanut’ and how anti-oxidants fight free radicals:

The Bad Peanut

As doctors tend to be too nerdy in their communications, let me give you an example of the effects of free radicals and how they can affect you Have you ever had the experience of eating a bag of peanuts at a ball game? I’m talking about the peanuts in the shell. What fun it is to shuck those peanuts and throw the shells on the ground! Well, have you ever gotten one of those peanuts that is a bad one? I don’t even have to ask, you know the experience; it is bitter and rancid, and you try to spit it out, inconspicuously.

Now what happened? In nature there are anti-oxidants in foods. In the peanut there is Vitamin E and other factors. In the case of the bad peanut, some free radicals from the outside were greater than the anti-oxidants in the shell or covering of the peanut and they went to work — they altered the cellular structure of the peanut. The proteins that make up the peanut were altered. The peanut oil went rancid. It became a petri dish for fungus. The peanut was either on its way out or had already been dead when it went to the dry-roaster.

Now consider the cells in your body. Assume a person has high blood pressure. Is that normal or not normal? It’s not normal of course. So what’s happening? Did free radicals attack the cells of the kidneys? Are the interiors of the blood vessels clogged up with fats that are rancid due to being assaulted by free radicals? Are the hormones changing in the body because the cells are damaged by these harmful chemicals or ultraviolet rays? The answers are yes!

You see, a person with high blood pressure does not have a deficiency of beta blockers, diuretics, or the hundreds of other drugs that are fed to humans by the millions of tons each year. Most people are most likely lacking anti-oxidants.

The Best Nature Can Provide

If you were to ask a chemist to provide you with the best anti-oxidants money could buy, if he or she were honest, they would tell you it is not something they could cook up in the lab. They would tell you to look around the fields and orchards and if you found anything that was red, blue, purple or orange, you’d be in the right vicinity.

It turns out that in nature anti-oxidants are prevalent in mostly the red fruit and berry categories. In apples, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, Marion berries, grapes, pomegranates, cherries, bilberries, and others, the levels of anti-oxidants go off the charts.

The government came up with a measurement of the power of anti-oxidants called the ORAC scale. They found out that, with our Western diet, we lack anti-oxidants and receive only 500 – 800 ORAC per day. Researchers indicate that we’re not in the protective park unless we increase our ORAC value to 2000 – 3000 or more.

The solution is to eat more fruits and vegetables, but this advice is not heeded by most people. We’re too busy to do it, or these kinds of fruits and vegetables are unavailable or out of season.

My suggestion, as a doctor of alternative health care, is to supplement your diet with an anti-oxidant formula. One such formula contains over 20 fruit extracts and has an ORAC value approaching 2,500 ORAC per serving. And the fruit flavor of this powder, when mixed with water, is delicious. I recommend that a person takes two servings per day and increases their intake of fruits and vegetables.
