Are You Part of Inflammation Nation?

As the health care reform debate plays out in the media, you’ve probably heard a number of different viewpoints. Although it’s always good to be informed, it’s equally important to “bring the issue home” and begin to look at your own health. Ultimately, it is easier to reform oneself than an entire nation. I’d like to address the most frequent health issue facing us today. Did you know that the #1 reason people go to the doctor is because they have pain?

What is Pain Exactly?

Imagine that your body has its own unique language and way of conveying internal information. Pain is a form of communication from your body. When we are hurt, our defense mechanism kicks in and we know not to move the afflicted area, and to give it rest. If you twist and sprain your ankle, for example, the joint needs relaxation to heal. If you ignore this time-out process, you get more PAIN!

The good news is that the healing process is finite… the ankle will mend, the bruises will fade, and before long we’re back to normal again.

On the other side of the spectrum is chronic pain. If you experience this type of daily suffering, you know it can drive you over the edge.

Pain: Why Does it Persist?

If you answered this question by saying that it is a lack of pain medication in the body, I would have to give you an “F”! By the way, I would also give a resounding “flunk” to our health care system – as they practice the “If it hurts, medicate it” philosophy.

The truth is actually rather simple: if you’re constantly hurting then I would say – with 100% confidence – that you have way too much inflammation in your body!

The War Continues: Good Oils vs. Bad Oils

One of the most common causes of inflammation in the body is ingesting certain foods and substances that fall into the pro-inflammatory category — namely Omega 6 fatty acids – which are the inexpensive and often harmful oils that are rampant in junk and fast foods. Your body can only handle a small amount of these oils in your diet.

Then there is the healthy oil, Omega 3 Fatty Acids (found in sea creatures) – often sold as fish oil. This oil reduces inflammation in the body more efficiently than any known natural substance.

A century ago, the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio was around one- to-one (1:1). Today, bad oils are predominant and the ratio is upwards of 50:1. That means we’re consuming fifty times more Omega 6 oils (which cause pain and inflammation) than the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 oils. It’s no wonder that our country’s waiting rooms are filled with patients suffering from dozens of inflammatory diseases.

This widespread imbalance is the reason I call America the “Inflammation Nation,” and unfortunately the reason why so many of you are hurting right now. Furthermore, I believe that this disproportionate statistic is a contributing factor to our sick health care system!

Before we go further, let’s do a quick recap of Omega oils:

  • Omega 3’s are anti-inflammatory. They eliminate inflammation.
  • Omega 6’s are pro-inflammatory. They create inflammation.
  • Inflammation = Pain.

Although pain is a negative side effect of inflammation, it’s not the only one. Did you know that inflammation is responsible for most cardiovascular deaths (not cholesterol as many believe), as well as Alzheimer’s, and disorders such as diabetes and thyroid conditions? The fact is inflammation gets into organs, blocks blood and nerve flow, and can cause vital systems to shut down.
