In March of this year, a California environmental group filed a lawsuit against several fish oil manufacturers claiming that their supplements contain unacceptable levels of PCBs. As many of you know, lawmakers banned toxic polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) after researchers suspected their link to cancer thirty years ago. Under California’s Proposition 65, both manufacturers and retailers are required to tell consumers that their fish oil pills contain PCB toxins. I cannot say that this lawsuit surprises me.

In 2007, I attended Expo West in Anaheim, California – the largest health food and supplement convention in the world. At the time, I was interested in producing my own Omega-3 supplement, so I met with a number of fish oil companies. The focus of each meeting centered on the source of the Omega-3 oils: cod, herring and salmon— were most common. All of these fish oil manufacturers chose species that typically live for years, making them susceptible to long-term chemical exposure. When I asked the fish oil manufacturers about contaminants, they explained their oil purification process – which unfortunately entailed using chemical solvents to remove toxins.

As a naturopathic doctor and a consumer, I found it alarming that manufacturers used chemical solvents – especially in products intended to promote health! I was even more concerned about the probability that trace solvents would remain in supplements for consumers to ingest. In light of their disclosure, I walked away from our discussions believing that there must be a safer way of extracting Omega-3s.

Ultimately, I found a company that extracts Omega-3 oil from krill and went on to develop my own formula called OmegaKrill. Since krill is harvested in the unpolluted waters of the Antarctic Ocean, it is a much safer source of essential fatty acids. Unlike large fish, krill’s life span is around 90 days – which further eliminates the concern over contaminants. Compared to fish oil, it also contains triple the amount of Omega-3s and antioxidants.

To maximize antioxidant benefits and to preserve freshness, OmegaKrill’s oil is procured using a cold press processing method. Environmentally, krill is one of the most sustainable and abundant organisms on the planet so it is friendlier to our ecosystem than fish oil.

Today, tens of thousands reap the benefits of OmegaKrill and I am delighted to say it is one of the top-sellers at Dr. Newton’s Naturals.

Remember that when it comes to your health, it is important to do your homework. You and your loved ones deserve all the benefits offered by pure natural health supplements.

Yours in Health,

Dr. P

Because of his melatonin trials, we now know a great deal more about this important hormone. Here are a few facts you may find interesting…

Melatonin and Healthy Aging

In addition to promoting restful sleep, melatonin contains some of the most powerful antioxidants ever discovered! In fact, Dr. Pinkus’ Sublingual Sleep helps prevent free radical damage and encourages cell repair. When considering new ways to fight aging, remember that melatonin is very helpful in healing and repairing your body at night.

Non-Toxic and Safe

The first human trials of melatonin occurred over 60 years ago. Researchers tested a dose of 700 mg on each subject! Although they reported feeling sleepy, they experienced no other noticeable differences. Decades of scientific studies later, experts now recommend 3 mg doses of melatonin to help induce sleep (the same dosage in Sublingual Sleep). Research has also shown that melatonin is non-toxic, non-addictive and more effective with continued use.

Circadian Rhythms

If you look at any life form – including plants, animals or humans – they all follow circadian rhythms, or day/night patterns. Plants open their foliage and flowers toward the sun only to close them at night. In a similar way, animals retreat to their den and sleep. Humans need the same downtime – a solid 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

Can you guess what hormone controls the circadian rhythms of each of these life forms? If you answered “melatonin,” you are correct. In fact, melatonin is the only substance found in plants, animals and humans in an identical form. This is a true rarity in the natural world. Another interesting detail about melatonin is that it is both fat and water-soluble. Because of its ability to repair cells and cell membranes, it’s one of the most valuable nutrients for your health.

Choose Your Melatonin Well

Because inferior grade melatonin is commercially available and used in many sleep supplements, it is prudent to be aware of these formulas when shopping around. Dr. Pinkus’ Sublingual Sleep contains the highest quality melatonin on the market. When you try it, you will appreciate how fast it works and how effective it is in helping you sleep. For those of you who are not problem sleepers, try Sublingual Sleep at bedtime for its antioxidant potency, ability to lower blood pressure, improve cardio health, and to help you wake up more rejuvenated.

I just completed a lengthy study on sleep and one thing is for sure: we are a sleep-deprived nation. Many of us think that we can get by on less shut-eye and still function well enough to juggle our daily activities. The truth is we cannot.

The more sleep research I uncover, the clearer this epidemic hits home. Whether it is stories I receive from customers or my own experiences, sleep – or a lack thereof – substantially affects our health.

Here are a few reasons why.

Sleep and Weight Gain

If you eat 10% more calories each day (which may amount to seemingly harmless calories – such as a few extra sodas, a glass of beer or wine, a hand full of chips, etc…) you will most likely gain 15 pounds in a year’s time. The same is true if you get 10% less sleep each night. In addition, those who sleep less than 7 hours a night have an average body mass index of 26.8 — about 2 points higher than the average BMI of those who slept more than 7 hours.

Additionally, lack of sufficient sleep impedes hormones that regulate appetite – especially a hormone called leptin – which tells the brain when we are full. Not only do we typically have a greater appetite when we are tired, but we also gravitate toward junk foods and unhealthy energy drinks. To complicate matters, when our sleep cycle is incomplete, our system has difficulty finishing the digestive process – resulting in weight gain and a slower metabolism.

Sleep and Daily Function

You may think you can get by on less than 6 hours of sleep each night. Perhaps you can, for a short time. However, if you sleep less than 6 hours for two weeks straight, studies suggest you will:

Experience memory difficulties

Be at greater risk for an accident – due to a slower reaction time

Have weakened cognitive abilities

Lower your immunity

Sacrifice the benefit of optimal cellular repair

Also, if you sleep less than 7 hours (compared to 8 hours), your risk for catching a cold increases by 300%.

Sleep and Longevity

Studies also show that people who consistently sleep between 6.5 and 7.5 hours live the longest. Those who sleep over eight hours and under six and a half tend to have shorter life spans.

How Well Do You Sleep?

Life is often stressful. And for those with hectic schedules, sleep is typically the first thing to go. However, the more stress you experience, the more your body needs sleep and the benefits it offers. There are plenty of tips for better sleep, but I have found that it helps to find a consistent sleep routine, avoid caffeine after 3 pm, and turn down the noise – and the lights – an hour before bedtime. Also, look out for my new Sublingual Sleep formula – with melatonin – coming soon.

On February 10th, 2010, Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Bryon Dorgan (D-SD) introduced a bill that could dramatically alter the dietary supplement industry.

This bill puts the government in charge of approving new supplements. It also means regulations, controls, and more red tape – essentially making it very difficult – if not impossible – to purchase affordable dietary supplements. The hidden purpose of this bill is to give the pharmaceutical industry – who in many ways controls the FDA and other government organizations – the ability to take over the entire supplement industry. Here is their agenda as I see it:

To eliminate natural, healthy remedies and redirect the public towards prescription drugs only.

To force vitamin manufacturers out of business with excessive paperwork, reporting and government regulations. The majority of supplement companies would fold because these controls would be too expensive to implement. As a result, “big pharma” would takeover the vitamin market. Just think…you would need a prescription to buy vitamins!

There are already a few examples of this: A prescription form of niacin, a B-vitamin, sells for $145 for a 60 day supply. You can buy the same at a health food store for around $8. A prescription fish oil costs almost eight times more than what you spend on a reputable brand.

The senators introduced this bill due to an incident involving the claims of a few professional athletes who believe that they were mislead into taking illegal substances (steroids and other banned ingredients such as ephedra) because the ingredients of their health supplements were unlisted on their labels. If it passes, Senator McCain plans to give the FDA unprecedented control over the vitamin industry.

The unfortunate fact is that the FDA already controls the food supplement industry. Either the athletes who took the questionable supplements knew what they were taking, or the FDA did not monitor those companies with their extant policies.

Before introducing one of my new supplements, I comply with each letter of the law – down to the smallest detail. I also use labs that follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) – which were created by the FDA in the first place. The FDA presently mandates and monitors compliance of these manufacturing practices.

The truth is this: it is a misnomer to name this bill the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act” because there are effective measures already in place protecting U.S. consumers.

In fact, according to the American Association of Poison Control, there were no fatalities in 2008 resulting from dietary supplement intake. In contrast, almost 100,000 people died in 2008 due to prescription drugs. As you can see, the intentions behind this bill are questionable – at best.

For what it’s worth, I am not criticizing Senator McCain or Senator Dorgan. However, I am very concerned about losing our choice to manufacture and sell supplements that provide wonderful health benefits. I believe this bill could lead to an increase in people taking prescription drugs and undergoing risky surgical procedures. It would also remove my ability to bring you new formulas.

Please take action by clicking on the following link and email your senators with a resounding “NO” today!
